New Coal Fired Power Plant Proposed in Ogeechee Watershed

A collection of Electrical Membership Cooperatives (EMCs) have proposed to build a coal-fired power plant near Sandersville, Georgia.

The proposed plant will be located just a few miles from the Ogeechee River and will use up to 16 million gallons of water a day from groundwater sources in the watershed and surface water from the Oconee River.

Ogeechee-Canoochee Riverkeeper is reviewing the potential impacts of this proposed plant on the watershed.  Our initial research indicates that the plant:

  • will put more mercury into the river and fish,
  • potentially impact the amount of drinking water available for people in the Washington County area, and
  • potentially reduce groundwater flows to the Ogeechee River

More information on the plant, including recent filings on the permit application, is available in our Library.
