OCRK Wins Landmark Lawsuit to Protect Forested Wetlands
On May 27, 2008, U.S. District Judge B. Avant Edenfield ruled in favor of Ogeechee-Canoochee Riverkeeper in a lawsuit filed in November 2006 against the U.S. Army Corps on Engineers. At issue in Ogeechee-Canoochee Riverkeeper, Inc. v. United States Army Corps of Engineers et al. was a decision by the Corps to exempt a proposed timber harvest from Clean Water Act regulation, on the basis that the harvest was a part of an ongoing tree farming operation. Judge Edenfield held that the proposed harvest was not a part of an ongoing tree farming operation and therefore not exempt from clean water regulations.

This win sends a clear message to our government: stop looking for ways to get around the Clean Water Act, and get busy doing your job - protecting our rivers and streams from pollution.
This decision will likely have wide-ranging effects, including requiring that the government conduct a more thorough review before exempting operations from the requirements of the Clean Water Act. For more information and to read the decision, visit our library.
Ogeechee-Canoochee Riverkeeper was represented in this case by the Southern Environmental Law Center and the Turner Environmental Law Clinic.

We are planning to pull out at a private landing and shuttle participants back to pick up their cars and participants will return to the take out location to pick up their boats. We will have a snack waiting at the take-out location for everyone. Participants will need to bring a sack lunch, sunglasses, sunscreen, hat, drinks, bug spray, boat, paddles, life vest for each participant in the boat. Each participant will need to be at least 17 years of age to paddle alone. Participants under the age of 17 will need to be with an adult. Participants need to make sure they follow the recommended number of participants per boat. There is no preregistration required. Participants will register the morning of the paddle. Registration will be quick and easy! Thanks Dianna
